A filler metal powder coating is welded with laser cladding of powder onto an existing part using a laser. This additive manufacturing process provides higher strength for the components and increases the load capacity. Repair instead of replacement becomes more cost-effective thanks to laser cladding with powder, because worn components can be renewed precisely at the stressed parts.

Laser cladding with powder is primarily completely automated in manufacturing applications, although it may also be performed manually. Laser hardening is meant to improve the material’s mechanical resistance. It is often called hardening of surface-layers. Heat treatment is accompanied by accelerated cooling results, selective modification and structural transformation. When passing around the surface to be hardened, the laser heats the substance locally to just below the solder pool temperature. This accelerated cooling contributes to the hardened layer forming.

In activity, laser hardening improves the lifespan of components exposed to wear. Wear resistance, heat resistance, residual stresses in the hardened base, technical properties and corrosion resistance are strengthened by laser hardening. Laser hardening is used locally in surrounding areas to mitigate heat production.

Application of Laser Hardening

Laser hardening can be reasonably applied on spots, where only certain areas of the component must be hardened, like e.g. laser hardening of cutting edges, laser hardening of bearing seats.

The laser hardening provides a solution in particular when the workpiece must not be distorted by means of the heat treatment, such as e.g.:
