How Does Laser Peening Work?
Laser peening is a method of mechanical surface change, not heat treatment. To generate shock waves that propagate through the target material and create compressive residual stresses, we use a high-energy pulsed laser beam. In the near surface area of the metal, the shockwave mechanics cause gradient cold work that contributes to the formation of compressive stresses that increase the toughness and efficiency of metal parts.

Laser Peening System is a seeded diode pumped pulsed YLF laser that operates in the infrared at a wavelength of 1053 nm. The laser is capable of a repetition rate of 20 Hz and is able to emit an 8 to 16 ns pulse containing 10 Joules of energy. The pulse is selectable to attain discrete pulse rates depending on process parameters. The 200 Watt average power is the highest power pulsed laser available for laser peening. The system can process up to 29” inches (187 cm2) per minute.
