Why Automotive Manufacturing Needs Flexible Cutting

An automotive plant cuts an enormous range of parts: thick brackets and chassis members, thin body panels and reinforcements, heat shields, gaskets, interior trims and, increasingly, aluminium battery trays and copper busbars for electric vehicles. Model changes come often, and each one brings new part shapes.

Press blanking and punching need a die for every shape, and every design change means a new die and weeks of lead time. Plasma and mechanical cutting leave wider kerfs, more heat and more burr to remove. A laser cuts straight from the CAD file, so a new part or a revised contour goes into production as soon as the program is ready.

Laser Cutting for Body, Chassis and EV Parts

Laser cutting focuses a high-power fibre laser beam to a small spot that melts or vaporises the metal, while an assist gas such as nitrogen, oxygen or compressed air blows the molten material out of the kerf. The CNC moves the beam along the programmed contour, and nesting software arranges parts on the sheet to reduce scrap.

Because the beam is narrow and the heat input is concentrated, parts come off with clean edges and little distortion, often ready for welding or assembly without further machining. The same method cuts steel, stainless steel, aluminium, copper and brass, which suits mixed-material vehicles and EV platforms.

Why Power, Accuracy and Axes Must Match the Part

No single cutting machine suits every automotive part. Three choices decide the right one:

  • Laser power: higher power cuts thicker material and runs faster; machines from 1 kW to 12 kW cut mild steel up to 25–30 mm, stainless steel up to 20–25 mm and aluminium up to 15–20 mm.
  • Accuracy: positioning accuracy from ±0.05 mm down to ±0.01 mm sets how tight the tolerances on brackets, trims and battery parts can be.
  • Axes: flat sheet needs a 2D bed, while formed, drawn or 3D parts need a 4- or 5-axis head that follows the surface.

Built for High-Mix Automotive Production

The range covers flat sheet, 3D parts and small precision components, so a plant can match each job to the right machine.

Thick sections at high power

Fibre laser drilling and cutting machines from 1 kW to 12 kW handle chassis brackets, reinforcements and thick plate, with repeatability of ±0.02–0.03 mm and speeds up to 30–40 m/min on thin sheet.

Fast, accurate sheet and trim cutting

Metal laser cutting machines from 500 W to 6 kW+ reach speeds up to 120 m/min on thin sheet with positioning accuracy up to ±0.01 mm. A CO₂ option cuts plastics, composites and trim materials.

Cutting and welding formed parts

The LASERVORM multi-axis machine uses a 3-, 4- or 5-axis gantry with a 1000 × 1000 × 420 mm travel range, and switches between cutting and welding through software on the same 1064 nm source.

Small, precise battery parts

For busbars, battery enclosures and small structural parts, a compact LASERVORM machine of up to 500 W cuts to ±0.01 mm and welds cell interconnects in the same workspace.

Building a Complete Automotive Cutting Setup

For thick chassis parts and brackets, the Fiber Laser Drilling and Cutting Machine provides 1 kW to 12 kW of fibre laser power with automatic nesting. Body panels, reinforcements and interior trims are cut on the Metal Laser Cutting Machine, with up to ±0.01 mm accuracy and an optional CO₂ source for non-metals. Formed and 3D parts that need both cutting and welding go to the Multi-Axis Laser Cutting and Laser Welding Machine. For EV busbars, battery enclosures and other small precision parts, the High Precision Laser Welding and Cutting Machine cuts and welds in a 600 × 600 × 300 mm workspace.

Who Uses It

  • Automotive OEM body, chassis and EV plants
  • Tier-1 and tier-2 sheet metal and fabrication suppliers
  • EV battery pack, enclosure and busbar manufacturers
  • Exhaust, heat shield and interior trim makers
  • Prototype shops and automotive R&D centres

FAQs

Laser cutting goes straight from the CAD file to the part, so new models and design changes need no new press dies. Automotive parts come off with clean edges, a narrow kerf and little heat distortion, often ready for welding. The same machine cuts steel, stainless steel, aluminium, copper and brass, which suits body, chassis and EV battery parts made in many variants.

It depends on laser power. Fibre laser machines from 1 kW to 12 kW cut mild or carbon steel up to 25–30 mm, stainless steel up to 20–25 mm and aluminium up to 15–20 mm. Most body panels and reinforcements are far thinner, where higher power is used for speed instead, with cutting speeds up to 120 m/min on thin sheet.

Yes. The LASERVORM Multi-Axis Laser Cutting and Laser Welding Machine uses a 3-, 4- or 5-axis gantry and one 1064 nm source for both processes, switching between them through software. Formed parts, sensor housings and battery components can be trimmed and welded in one setup. For smaller precision parts such as busbars, a compact LASERVORM machine cuts to ±0.01 mm and welds.

United Spectrum Instruments (USI), Chennai, supplies fibre laser cutting machines from 500 W to 12 kW and is the official distributor of LASERVORM multi-axis cutting and welding systems in India. Automotive plants, sheet metal suppliers and EV battery makers get the complete setup, including Donaldson BOFA fume extraction, from one supplier with pre-sales guidance and after-sales support.
