Why Manufacturing Needs Dust and Fume Extraction Sized to the Load
Manufacturing covers a wide range of work: cutting, grinding, sanding, polishing, CNC routing, machining, laser processing and finishing of metal, plastic, composite and wood parts. Some machines release a light, steady dust; others throw out large volumes of heavy debris for hours at a time.
Dust that is not captured settles on machines, parts and floors, wears moving parts and reaches the people working nearby. In manufacturing, the most common problem is not the absence of extraction but extraction that does not match the load: a small unit that clogs within weeks on a heavy machine, or a main filter that fills with coarse debris it was never meant to catch.
How a Dust Fume Extractor Works
A dust fume extractor draws air from a hood or nozzle at the machine, passes it through filter stages and returns the cleaned air to the workshop. Coarse particles are best taken out early, so that the finer filters downstream last longer and airflow stays steady.
Donaldson BOFA makes compact dust extractors for single machines and small groups of stations, and inline pre-separation units that sit between the machine and the extractor to take out heavier debris first.
Why Dust Load Matters
Three questions settle most manufacturing extraction choices:
- How much dust? A light, steady load suits a compact extractor on its own; a heavy load needs pre-filtration ahead of it.
- How coarse is it? Heavy chips and debris should be separated before they reach fine filters, where they would block them quickly.
- How many stations? One machine can have its own unit, while two stations close together can share a higher-airflow extractor.
Built for Manufacturing Workshops
Each unit covers a different part of the extraction setup.
Single machines and benches
The DustPRO 100 gives 180 m³/hr at 110 mbar with multi-stage filtration, visual filter indicators and quick-access panels. It handles polymer dust, MDF particles, metallic powders, fibreglass and composite debris from CNC routers, engravers and similar machines.
One or two stations with higher airflow
The DustPRO 400 gives 400 m³/hr at 96 mbar in a 14 kg unit with multi-stage filtration and visual filter-change indicators. Depending on the configuration, it can serve one or two connected stations.
Separating heavier debris first
The AD Cyclone is an inline cyclone separator that uses centrifugal force to remove larger particles before they reach the main extractor. It needs no power, weighs 7 kg, has a brushed stainless steel body and is emptied by hand without tools.
Very high dust loads
The ILF 1000 is an inline pre-filter for very high dust loads, fitted between the hood and the extraction unit on 150 mm ducting. It needs no power, uses a bag filter and has a brushed stainless steel cabinet.
Building a Complete Manufacturing Dust Extraction Setup
Single machines and benches with a light, steady dust load start with the DustPRO 100, a compact dust fume extractor that sits beside the machine. Where two stations sit close together or more airflow is needed, the DustPRO 400 takes over. Processes that throw out heavier debris have an AD Cyclone fitted in the duct ahead of the extractor, and machines with very high dust loads are protected by an ILF 1000 inline pre-filter. Genuine BOFA replacement filters for every unit are supplied from India.

FAQs
Why is dust and fume extraction important in manufacturing?
Cutting, grinding, polishing, routing and machining release dust that settles on machines, parts and floors and reaches the people working nearby. Capturing it at the source keeps machines and parts cleaner, reduces wear and cleaning time and protects operators. The extractor must match the dust load, or it will clog quickly and lose airflow on heavy work.
How do I choose the right dust fume extractor for a machine?
Start with the dust load, how coarse the dust is and the number of stations. A light, steady load on one machine suits a compact unit such as the BOFA DustPRO 100. Two stations close together, or a need for more airflow, suit the DustPRO 400 at 400 m³/hr. Heavy or coarse debris needs pre-separation ahead of the extractor.
What does a cyclone or inline pre-filter add to a dust extraction system?
It takes out heavier particles before they reach the extractor’s finer filters, so those filters last longer and airflow stays steady. The BOFA AD Cyclone separates larger debris by centrifugal force and needs no power. For very high dust loads, the ILF 1000 inline pre-filter fits on 150 mm ducting between the hood and the extractor.
