ID OSA Optical Spectrum Analyser for Opto-Electronic Packaging

Industry:

Opto-Electronic Packaging
Products:
Optical Communication

Opto-electronic packaging assembles and characterises laser diodes, VCSELs, photonic integrated circuits (PICs), and silicon photonic devices, where both mechanical alignment/bonding accuracy and optical performance must be verified before a packaged device ships. While dedicated active-alignment, laser-welding, and characterisation stations handle device-level assembly and electro-optical test, spectral verification of the laser or PIC’s output remains a distinct measurement step, typically performed with a standalone optical spectrum analyser.

Because packaged laser diodes and VCSELs must meet tight wavelength and mode-purity specifications before shipment, manufacturers use the ID OSA to verify centre wavelength, side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR), and spectral linewidth after assembly — confirming that die bonding, welding, or thermal packaging steps haven’t introduced strain-induced wavelength shift or mode instability. PIC and silicon photonic device testing similarly benefits from spectral characterisation of on-chip laser sources or modulated outputs, alongside the dedicated optical/electrical characterisation systems used for device-level testing.

Because packaging lines often run high-volume, repeatable test sequences, the ID OSA’s SCPI-programmable, no-recalibration design allows it to sit alongside dedicated alignment and characterisation stations on the same production line, verifying spectral compliance as a final quality-control step without introducing a separate calibration cycle into the packaging workflow.
