Why Automotive Electronics Need Clean Boards at Every Stage
Automotive electronics covers engine and body control units, sensors, infotainment and instrument clusters, battery management boards and the connectors and cables that link them. A typical line solders and reworks boards, applies conformal coating to protect them, marks boards and parts for traceability and drills or machines boards and housings.
Each stage leaves something behind. Flux fumes and residue from soldering, vapours from coating and fine dust from drilling and machining can settle on boards before the next step. In automotive electronics, extraction is part of keeping each board clean as it moves from one process to the next, as well as protecting the operators along the line.
Electronic Fume Extraction for ECU and Sensor Lines
Electronic fume extraction captures fumes and dust at the source, filters the air and returns it to the room. Donaldson BOFA makes separate units for soldering, coating and dust, so each stage of an automotive electronics line can have extraction designed for what it releases.
The setup on this page combines three BOFA units with a LASIT green laser marker, covering soldering and rework, coating, traceability marking and board machining on the same line.
Why Process Residue Matters
On a line where boards pass through several processes, three sources of residue need control:
- Soldering and rework: flux smoke settles near the joint, and boards often go on to be coated, so it is best removed at the tip.
- Conformal coating: coating gives off chemical vapours and fine particles that should be captured at the coating station rather than left in the room.
- Drilling and machining: fine board and housing dust spreads easily and can land on finished assemblies nearby.
Built for Automotive Electronics Production
Each product covers a different stage of an automotive electronics line.
Multi-station soldering and rework
The V 600 serves up to six workstations from one cabinet at 350 m³/hr, below 60 dBA, with HEPA and activated carbon filters. It is built for continuous, multi-shift use, with iQ diagnostics and filter-replacement alerts.
Conformal coating stations
The AD 350 CU is a compact 19 kg unit with a brushed stainless steel cabinet, giving 350 m³/hr below 68 dBA through a multi-stage filter system for coating vapours and fine particles, with an optional filter-change signal.
Traceability marking on boards and connectors
The LASIT Green Laser Marking System works at about 532 nm, which copper, gold and many plastics absorb better than infrared. It marks FR4 PCBs, flex circuits, connectors and cables, with FlyCAD software for serial numbers, barcodes and logos and PROFIBUS, PROFINET or RS232 links to the line.
Board drilling and machining dust
The DustPRO 1000 iQ gives 850 m³/hr at 100 mbar with pre-filter and HEPA stages. Its iQ LCD panel shows airflow, pressure and filter life, with USB logging and replacement alerts.
Building a Complete Automotive Electronics Fume Extraction Setup
Soldering and rework stations on the line are connected to a V 600, which serves up to six workstations. Conformal coating stations are paired with the AD 350 CU. Boards, connectors and cables are marked for traceability on the Green Laser Marking System, and drilling and machining of boards and housings are covered by the DustPRO 1000 iQ. Genuine BOFA replacement filters for every unit are supplied from India.

FAQs
Why is fume extraction needed in automotive electronics manufacturing?
Automotive electronics lines solder, rework, coat, mark and machine boards one stage after another. Flux fumes, coating vapours and fine dust can settle on boards before the next step and reach operators along the line. Extracting each at the source keeps boards clean between stages and keeps the air safe through multi-shift production of ECUs, sensors and control modules.
Is separate extraction needed for conformal coating?
Yes, it is a good idea. Conformal coating gives off chemical vapours and fine particles that a soldering extractor is not set up for. The BOFA AD 350 CU is a compact unit for coating stations, giving 350 m³/hr through a multi-stage filter system, with a brushed stainless steel cabinet and an optional filter-change signal.
Why use a green laser to mark automotive electronics?
A green laser at about 532 nm is absorbed better than infrared by copper, gold and many plastics. The LASIT Green Laser Marking System marks FR4 PCBs, flex circuits, connectors and cables with serial numbers, barcodes and logos through FlyCAD software, and links to the production line over PROFIBUS, PROFINET or RS232 for traceability.
Who supplies electronic fume extraction for automotive electronics in India?
United Spectrum Instruments (USI), Chennai, is the authorised distributor of Donaldson BOFA and the official distributor of LASIT in India. USI supplies soldering and coating fume extractors, dust extractors, laser marking systems and genuine filters to automotive electronics suppliers and EV makers, as a complete setup from one supplier with installation, training and after-sales support.
