Why Electronic Components Manufacturing Needs Fume Control
Resistors, capacitors, connectors, sensors and microelectronic assemblies pass through soldering, bonding, coating and laser processes, and each one releases something into the air. Solder flux gives off a fine smoke of rosin particles and gases, adhesives and conformal coatings release vapours, and laser marking and drilling produce particles from plastics, epoxies and metals.
Left in the room, these fumes reach the operator first, because soldering and inspection happen at arm’s length. They also settle back as a film on optics, sensors, stencils and finished components, where residue can affect bonding, coating adhesion and long-term reliability. Room ventilation only dilutes the problem; capture at the point of work removes it.
Electronic Fume Extraction at the Workstation
Electronic fume extraction draws the fume from a nozzle, arm or hood placed right next to the soldering tip, bonding head or laser, before it rises into the operator’s breathing zone. The air passes through a filter train and returns clean to the room, so no ducting to the outside is needed.
Donaldson BOFA designs its electronics extractors around this principle, from small units for one soldering iron to multi-station systems that serve a whole line from one cabinet.
Why Filter Choice Matters as Much as Airflow
Electronics fumes are a mix of fine particles and gases, so the filter set has to handle both:
- Pre-filter: captures the larger particles first and protects the more expensive filters behind it, typically replaced every one to two months.
- HEPA filter: removes the fine particulate in solder smoke and laser plume that a simple foam or fan filter would let through.
- Activated carbon: adsorbs the gases, VOCs and odours from flux, adhesives and coatings, which particle filters cannot stop.
Built for Component Production Lines
Electronic components manufacturing combines single benches, multi-operator lines and laser cells, so one electronic fume extraction unit rarely fits all.
One operator, one bench
The T1 Compact and T 15 serve individual soldering and rework stations at below 56 dBA, at 5 kg each, light enough to sit on the bench or under a hood.
Two operators sharing a unit
The V 250 supports two workstations with 180 m³/hr of airflow, HEPA and carbon filters and status lights that show when a filter needs changing.
Up to six stations from one cabinet
The V 600 serves up to six workstations at 350 m³/hr and below 60 dBA, with iQ diagnostics and filter-replacement alerts.
Laser marking and drilling cells
The AD 500 iQ handles heavier laser fume loads at 550 m³/hr, with a dual blower, HEPA and carbon filtration and iQ airflow monitoring.
Building a Complete Fume Extraction Setup
Individual soldering, rework and inspection benches are covered by the T1 Compact, a quiet single-operator unit with HEPA and carbon filtration. Where two operators share a bench, the V 250 extracts from both stations. Assembly lines with several soldering positions are served from one cabinet by the V 600, for up to six workstations. Laser marking, drilling and coding of components and PCBs are handled by the AD 500 iQ, and genuine BOFA replacement filters for every unit are supplied from India.
Who Uses It
- Passive component, connector and sensor manufacturers
- PCB assembly and electronics manufacturing services (EMS) companies
- Microelectronics and hybrid circuit producers
- Repair, rework and quality laboratories
- Electronics R&D centres, universities and training institutes

FAQs
Why is fume extraction needed in electronic components manufacturing?
Soldering, bonding, coating and laser marking release flux smoke, adhesive vapours and fine particles right at the operator’s breathing zone. In electronic components manufacturing these fumes also settle on optics, stencils and finished parts, where residue can affect bonding and coating. Capturing them at the workstation protects operators, keeps the line clean and supports workplace safety compliance.
What does an electronic fume extraction system remove?
An electronic fume extraction system removes the fine particles in solder smoke and laser plume, together with the gases, VOCs and odours released by flux, adhesives and coatings. Donaldson BOFA units use a pre-filter for larger particles, a HEPA filter for fine particulate and an activated carbon stage for gases, so the cleaned air can return to the room without ducting.
How many soldering stations can one fume extractor serve?
It depends on the unit. The T1 Compact and T 15 serve a single soldering or rework station. The V 250 supports two workstations at 180 m³/hr, and the V 600 serves up to six workstations at 350 m³/hr from one cabinet. Laser marking and drilling cells with heavier fume loads are better served by a laser fume extractor such as the AD 500 iQ.
