Why Industrial Electronics Need Both Fume and Dust Extraction
Industrial electronics covers control panels, motor drives, PLCs, power supplies, instrumentation and automation equipment. These products are built in workshops that mix several kinds of work: wiring and hand soldering of terminals and through-hole boards, drilling and machining of enclosures, mounting plates and PCBs, and laser cutting and marking of panels and nameplates.
Each of these gives off something different. Soldering produces flux smoke and gases, drilling and machining produce fine dust, and laser processing of metal produces plume and hot sparks. In industrial electronics, one type of extractor rarely suits the whole floor, so each process needs extraction matched to what it releases.
Electronic Fume Extraction for Panel and Drive Workshops
Electronic fume extraction captures fumes and dust at the source, passes them through filter stages suited to the load and returns the cleaned air to the workshop. Donaldson BOFA makes separate ranges for soldering fume, dust and laser fume, so each station can have a unit designed for its job.
Bench units and dust extractors recirculate the air without ducting, while laser stations can be connected through ducting to a larger central unit with spark protection placed before its filters.
Why Fume and Dust Need Different Extraction
The filter train decides how well an extractor copes with a process:
- Soldering fume: flux smoke is fine and carries gases and odours, so it needs HEPA and activated carbon filtration at the bench.
- Drilling and machining dust: heavier particles would load a fine filter quickly, so a pre-filter takes the coarse dust before the HEPA stage.
- Laser sparks: cutting and marking metal can throw hot embers into the duct, so a spark arrestor catches them before they reach the main filter.
Built for Industrial Electronics Production
Each unit covers a different area of an industrial electronics workshop.
Panel wiring and soldering benches
The V 250 serves two operators at 180 m³/hr and 30 mbar, below 61 dBA, with pre-filter, HEPA and activated carbon stages and status lights for filter changes. It can be installed under or beside the bench.
PCB processing, drilling and machining dust
The DustPRO Universal extracts dust at 285 m³/hr and 96 mbar through pre-filter and HEPA stages, in a 33 kg unit with filter condition indicators. With suitable ducting it can serve two machines.
Spark protection for laser stations
The Spark Arrestor 2 sits in the duct ahead of the extractor and catches sparks and hot embers before they reach the main filter. It has a brushed stainless steel cabinet and a mesh that is cleaned by brushing or air-blasting.
Central extraction for several lasers
The AD 2000 iQ gives 2500 m³/hr at 96 mbar with pre-filter, HEPA and activated carbon stages and dual motors. Its iQ platform monitors differential pressure, flow and filter status, with alarms, and it can serve several laser machines through ducting.
Building a Complete Industrial Electronics Fume Extraction Setup
Panel wiring and soldering benches start with the V 250, which serves two operators from one unit. Drilling, machining and PCB processing stations are connected to the DustPRO Universal. Where lasers cut or mark metal panels, enclosures and nameplates, a Spark Arrestor 2 is fitted in the duct, and the lasers are served by an AD 2000 iQ central unit. Genuine BOFA replacement filters for every unit are supplied from India.

FAQs
Why is fume extraction needed in industrial electronics manufacturing?
Industrial electronics workshops mix hand soldering of panels and drives with drilling, machining and laser processing of enclosures and boards. Soldering gives off flux smoke and gases, machining gives off fine dust and laser cutting of metal gives off plume and sparks. Extracting each at the source protects operators, keeps assemblies clean and stops dust and fume spreading across the floor.
Can one extractor handle both soldering fume and machining dust?
It is better to use separate units. Soldering fume is fine and carries gases, so it needs HEPA and activated carbon filtration, as in the BOFA V 250. Drilling and machining dust is heavier and would load a fine filter quickly, so the DustPRO Universal uses a pre-filter ahead of its HEPA stage and can serve two machines.
Why use a spark arrestor with laser fume extraction?
Laser cutting and marking of metal panels, enclosures and nameplates can throw sparks and hot embers into the duct. The BOFA Spark Arrestor 2 sits ahead of the extractor and catches them before they reach the main filter. Its mesh is cleaned by brushing or air-blasting, and it has a brushed stainless steel cabinet.
