  • Supplied and supported in India by USI, authorised distributor of ACSYS Lasertechnik and Donaldson BOFA

Why Jewellery and Precious Metals Need Non-Contact Marking

Jewellery and precious metals carry more information than ever: purity and hallmark details, the maker’s or brand’s mark, a serial or design code, and often a customer’s name or date. Every one of these marks has to sit on a small, curved and valuable piece without bending it, scratching the polish or removing metal that should stay on the scale.

Hand engraving and mechanical stamping depend on the operator and on tool wear, and stamping can distort thin walls. A laser touches nothing. The same file gives the same mark on the first ring and the five-hundredth, and the mark is part of the metal itself, so it cannot be peeled or polished off in normal wear.

Laser Engraving on Small, Curved and Valuable Pieces

Laser engraving removes or restructures a very thin layer of the surface with a focused beam steered by a galvanometer scanner. On gold, silver and platinum it can produce fine text, logos, patterns and codes, and with more passes it builds depth for relief work.

For a jeweller the difficulty is rarely the laser itself. It is holding a ring, bangle or coin so the mark lands in the right place, at the right focus, every time. The machines USI supplies for jewellery and precious metals are chosen around that problem.

Why Following the Surface Matters More Than Power

A laser mark is only as sharp as the focus on the part. Three features decide whether a precious-metal piece can be marked cleanly:

  • Rotary axis: turns rings, bangles and other round pieces under the beam, so text and patterns wrap around the inside or outside of the band.
  • Z-axis focus control: moves the focal plane to follow curved and domed surfaces, which is how relief is built on medallions and coin dies rather than imitated by changing power.
  • Vision and auto-focus: registers each piece before marking, so a small logo or code lands exactly where the design file puts it.

Built for Studios, Hallmarking Lines and Mints

The same process serves very different workplaces, from a bench in a jewellery studio to a batch line marking rings, bangles and pendants in volume.

Bench-side personalisation

A desktop machine with an 850 × 700 mm footprint fits on a standard workshop table. With the optional rotary axis it engraves names, dates and messages inside wedding bands and around bracelets at the bench.

Load one piece while the next is marked

A two-station rotary index machine engraves at one station while the operator unloads and reloads the other. Batches of rings, bangles and pendants with hallmark details, maker codes and logos move through without the laser standing idle.

Relief and depth for coins and medallions

3D laser engraving with 390 mm of Z-axis travel produces relief on curved and domed surfaces. Applications include coin die engraving, bullion marking and texture on watch dials.

Clean air at the bench

Engraving releases fine particles and fumes close to the operator’s face. A compact extractor beside the machine captures them at source with HEPA and carbon filters and keeps optics and finished pieces clean.

Putting Together a Complete Engraving Setup

A jewellery studio usually starts with the Desktop Laser Engraving Machine, adding the rotary axis for interior and exterior ring engraving. When volumes grow, the Rotary Index Laser Engraving Machine takes over batch marking of rings, bangles and pendants, with one station loading while the other engraves. For relief work on medallions, coin dies and bullion, the 3D Laser Engraving Machine follows the surface with its Z-axis to build depth. Alongside the bench machines, the BOFA AD Access fume extractor sits beside or under a benchtop laser and filters engraving fumes through HEPA and activated carbon stages.

Who Uses It

  • Jewellery manufacturers and retail jewellery studios
  • BIS-recognised assaying and hallmarking centres
  • Coin, medallion and bullion producers and refiners
  • Watch component and luxury accessory makers
  • Design institutes and jewellery training centres

FAQs

Laser engraving marks jewellery and precious metals without touching them, so thin rings, chains and pendants are not bent or scratched and almost no metal is removed. The same design file gives an identical mark on every piece, which suits hallmark details, maker codes and logos. The mark is part of the metal surface, so it does not wear off like ink and can be repeated across a whole batch.

Yes. A rotary axis turns the ring or bangle under the beam so text and patterns wrap around the inner or outer surface. The Desktop Laser Engraving Machine offers this as an option for bench-side personalisation of wedding bands and bracelets, while the Rotary Index Laser Engraving Machine provides a rotation axis at each of its two stations for 360° engraving in batches.

Yes, with a 3D laser engraving machine. Instead of imitating depth by changing power, its Z-axis moves the focal plane to follow curved and domed surfaces and builds relief layer by layer. The ACSYS 3D Laser Engraving Machine has 390 mm of Z-axis travel and is used for coin die engraving, bullion marking, medallions and watch dial texturing.

United Spectrum Instruments (USI), Chennai, is the authorised distributor in India for ACSYS Lasertechnik of Germany and for Donaldson BOFA. USI supplies desktop, rotary index and 3D laser engraving machines with matching fume extraction to jewellery makers, hallmarking centres and bullion producers, as a complete setup from one supplier with pre-sales guidance and after-sales support.
